Meaning of tribal tattoos?

I'm getting a tribal dragonfly in the hip and I just wanted to know if there is any significance to tattoos tribal? The dragonfly is what it has meant to me and I wanted the tribes just because I think it looks very nice. When I went to the consultation, however, The artist looked at me and said: uhm …. Why tribe?
